The Standard

By Lorena Lucero

What are the images that are sent to you when you flip through a fashion magazine? I don't know about you but all the images that are sent to me are thin, thin, thin!

DKNY models Ally McBeal, CK models, Felicity, Mandy Moore and the list goes on. Why do they all have to be thin! The media brainwashes the audiences with images of thin women being ideal. People comment that the media shouldn't be blamed for the standards that are set by them. What standards you might be asking yourself, thin is in and thick is out, for instance. This might not affect your daily life but it does to the millions of anorexics and bulimic that have weight as their main concern.

What do you think is the inspiration for all the people that are in diets, fashion models, and television of course? Millions of people go on diets every year to fit to the standard the media has set.

One of the reasons why anorexics and bulimic exist are because of how the media set the standard for ideal. Pageant winners, models, movie stars are becoming thinner and thinner as the years go on. People don't understand that the media is a paradox world and they should just see what is the reality.

Not everyone is thin, the average women is a size twelve. What is the media saying when their average pageant winners has a BMI (Body Mass Index), of 18.5. Which is known to be to the world health organization as malnutrition.

You shouldn't let the media set the rules that you live your life with. Don't try to be thin because that is what you see on t.v. , movies, or because you think thin is being beautiful. Choose to be thin because you want to, not because someone tells to that being thin is the way it should be.
